Lawrence, MA – Two students from Greater Lawrence Technical School were selected for the apprenticeship program with IBEW Local 103. The apprenticeship is a five-year program in which students become members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union. The student is trained in the apprenticeship program for free while earning wages and receiving health and retirement benefits. A special ceremony on May 16, 2014 honored Ruddy Ortiz and Jason Martinez of Lawrence.
John Lavoie, Superintendent-Director, Greater Lawrence Technical School said, “ A special thank you to IBEW Local 103 for the continuing partnership opening doors for students to successfully obtain their licensure. This scholarship from IBEW Local 103 is equal to a law student getting a four year scholarship to Harvard.”
Louis Antonellis , IBEW Local 103 Business Agent said, “ We started the program 8 years ago and every student is top notch. IBEW Local 103 is proud to offer these talented and bright students an opportunity to achieve their dreams and begin a life- long career path with decent wages, benefits and learning opportunities.”
Students were selected for their academic achievements, work ethic and determination. Senior Ruddy Ortiz said, “I am so thankful for this opportunity with IBEW Local 103 and understand the hard work needed to succeed. I am excited about currently working with IBEW Local 103 Contractor, Miller Brothers Electric in Chelmsford Mass installing solar panels for the Chelmsford school department.”
Senior Jason Martinez said he owes his support and drive from his mother who had him when she was 14. Martinez said, “ I want to be a role models for my 12 and 15 year-old brothers and show them that hard work and determination can achieve their dreams. I am excited to begin the apprenticeship at IBEW Local 103.”
