Atlanta – Two projects designed by The S/L/A/M Collaborative (SLAM) have been recognized for innovative design by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Georgia Association.
The Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine and the Clayton State University Lakeview Discovery and Science Center both received awards of merit.
The Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine is the resultant transformation of a donated 30-year-old pharmaceutical research building in downtown Kalamazoo.
Clayton State University Lakeview Discovery & Science Center
The program includes formal and informal spaces for a projected class size of 320 students, consolidating all functions into one building and allowing opportunities for interprofessional education and collaboration.
Sited on the eastern edge of a lake on the Clayton State University Campus, the Lakeview Discovery and Science Center (LDSC) serves as a literal gateway to an expanding campus. The three-story lab building is designed as a modern home for the sciences, featuring stacked biology and chemistry suites, each integrating research, prep, and teaching labs. Flanking the labs are 64- and 32-person classrooms and faculty office suites.

The AIA Georgia’s Design & Honor Awards program, which is now in its 44th year, was established to recognize the best in design by Georgia Architects on projects both locally and abroad.
Teaching, study and informal spaces at the Stryker School are centralized around a new three-story atrium connecting the existing building to a new elliptical pavilion addition. A 22,000-SF Simulation Center allows medical students to experience “doctoring” with simulated patients, before beginning their clinical rotations. In addition, defined learning communities and a boundaryless library offers access to information and study space anywhere in the building.
A challenge of the LDSC project was to create a modern STEM building, including teaming spaces, in an efficient footprint. The project solved this challenge by utilizing an innovative laboratory pod layout to maximize efficiency, freeing up square footage for a variety of types of collaborative spaces, each appealing to different types of learners. The Lakeview Discovery and Science Center has recently been completed and opened to students in August 2015.
