New cPort Branch Under Construction

Portland, ME – Designed by Gawron Turgeon Architects, P.C. (GTA), cPort Credit Union’s newest branch is currently under construction in downtown Portland. Scheduled for completion by December 2018, cPort Credit Union will strart serving new and existing members at its new location in early 2019.

This new 6,880sf, four-story building is intended for mixed-use. The structure’s first two floors are commercial space for a cPort Credit Union branch while the third and fourth floors will be a single, luxury residential unit with rooftop access. In addition to the banking-specific spaces such as an open-style lobby with teller pods, a comfortable lounge area, private offices, a conference room, and an online banking technology bar for members, the design includes the rooftop deck and new sidewalk that is integral to the neighborhood.

The site of the latest cPort branch, at the corner of India Street and Middle Street, posed some challenges, not least because it is subject to a number of historic design restrictions. This didn’t perturb Deirdre Pio, the project architect at GTA: “I enjoy designing on a challenging site. This cPort project allowed me to push the envelope on design while creating an engaging, thoughtful space that will function well for my client.” GTA prides itself on adopting a collaborative design and planning approach from the outset of every project; this team effort has paid off for the cPort branch, which benefited from the input of cPort staff, the vision of cPort’s president and CEO, Gene Ardito, and the skill of the Landry French Construction team, led by Matt Gagnon, senior project manager.

For this project, GTA applied all four of its in-house disciplines: architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, and master planning. The building was designed to fit the fabric of its urban environment and neighborhood; the material choices and architectural style reflect the history of cPort Credit Union and also represent a significant commitment to the city and the surrounding community. It was important to cPort Credit Union that the design include the leading-edge banking solutions they adopt, while remaining familiar to its members through the incorporation of cPort’s distinct branding.
