To be considered for the list, the Massachusetts-based business must be owned at least 51% by a woman or women.

In 2014, Jane Kaplan Peck became the majority owner and chief operating officer (COO) of Kaplan Construction. Since then, the company has grown to $49.5 million in annual revenue and 41 employees.

“We have made a very conscious effort to hire a gender-balanced staff and have been able to do so for all of our professional positions,” said Kaplan Peck. “It has been a challenge to hire female field staff, but we continue to strive to fill that gap.”

In October 2014, one of her first undertakings as the newly appointed COO was spearheading the effort to be certified as a WBE by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Minority Business Enterprises (MBEs) and women-owned businesses provide ever increasing value to the Massachusetts economy, making up the state’s fastest growing business sector in the Commonwealth.

This is the first time the BBJ ranked the state’s largest women-owned businesses as a standalone list.  Previously, the ranking of companies by revenue had been a combined list of minority- and women-owned businesses in Massachusetts.

Kaplan also frequently performs on projects requiring Boston Resident Jobs Policy compliance and has employed a significant number of women and minority-owned subcontractors in doing so.

A respected industry leader, Kaplan Peck has been named as one of the Women of Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate (FIRE) by Banking New England magazine; an Outstanding Woman of Family Business by The Warren Group; Emerging Leader of the Year by the Associated General Contractors Massachusetts Chapter in its first ever BWiC Inspire Awards; and one of the Women in Construction by the editorial board at Constructech Magazine.

Kaplan’s services include preconstruction, general contracting, construction management, and design/build. Kaplan serves a variety of clients including commercial, healthcare, historic rehab, institutional, recreational, and worship. Recent projects include The Revolution Hotel in Boston, Powder House in Somerville, the Center for Partnership in Early Education in Brookline, and renovations to Boston University’s Case Athletic Center and Children’s Center.
