Reading Post Office Redevelopment Begins

The POSTMARK project rendering – commercial entrance

Reading, MA – O’Sullivan Architects, Inc. (OSA) announced that construction is now underway for the building transformation of the 1917 former post office in the heart of Reading.

The re-development of the post office is a joint venture between DiBiase Homes and Matrix Property Group. The project is being built by Nauset Construction, and the residential units will be sold and marketed by Compass Real Estate.

The redevelopment of the Reading post office property will take a landmark structure which has long been part of the fabric of Reading’s downtown and create a vibrant mixed-use building with space for commercial tenants (three spaces totaling 8,309sf) to engage the street and provide 50 new units of housing (40 market rate, 10 affordable rate).

The new addition will be five stories with setbacks at the 4th and 5th floors forming roof terraces for residents to enjoy (the 5th story is the penthouses). A mix of one and two-bedroom condominium homes are designed for today’s lifestyle with open floor plans, abundant light, and energy efficient features.

The POSTMARK project features include:

  •  50 new luxury residential condominiums, comprised of 1, 2 bedroom, and penthouse units
  •  8,000sf of commercial space within the historic existing building
  •  1,200sf common lounge amenity space, 750sf common roof deck, and a 2,200sf courtyard garden space
  •  Underground, heated garaged parking for the residences

In addition to preserving the original post office structure itself, the plan will preserve the attractive exterior curved stairways at the front entrance to the building. The proposal adds new commercial space at the Haven Street sidewalk level, and two plazas, potentially for outside dining.
