Maugel DeStefano and Callahan Complete Residential Community

Worcester, MA — Maugel DeStefano Architects and Callahan Construction Managers have completed Poet Hill Place, a 210-unit, market-rate residential community in Worcester for owner SMC Management Corp. The project sits on a five-acre site on Hemans Street and was delivered a full month ahead of schedule.

The C-shaped building rises five stories over a double-podium parking garage, with studio, one-, and two-bedroom apartments. Maugel DeStefano used the site’s steep grade to place the building atop the structured parking and create a residential courtyard at the podium level, connected directly to Hemans Street. Amenities include a landscaped courtyard, grill stations, a fire pit, a bocce court, a rooftop deck, a cyber cafe, exercise and yoga spaces, and a community room.

“As architects, we approached the site’s significant grade change as a defining opportunity rather than a constraint,” said Mike Kunz, principal at Maugel DeStefano Architects. “By placing the building atop the structured parking, we were able to create a residential courtyard at the podium level that connects directly to Hemans Street and activates the heart of the community.”

Despite winter weather delays, the team completed the project a month ahead of the original estimate, allowing SMC Management to begin welcoming tenants sooner.
