Boston, MA – The American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) has named Tighe & Bond, Inc. as a winner of a 2018 Bronze Engineering Excellence Awards for its work on the Winchell Reservoir Dam Removal project in Granville.
The 2018 Engineering Excellence Awards were announced at the recent ACEC/MA Engineering Excellence and Awards Gala with emcees Beth J. Larkin, PE, MBTA Assistant General Manager for Capital Delivery and Housamm (“Sam”) H. Sleiman, PE, CCM, MassPort Director of Capital Programs & Environmental Affairs.
Tighe & Bond was retained by the City of Westfield to provide funding application assistance, engineering permitting and construction phase services for the project. The Winchell Reservoir Dam, constructed in 1899 and located in Granville, Massachusetts, served as a water supply for the City of Westfield, but ceased in this capacity during the 1950s.
The project goal was to fast-track dam removal to improve public safety, save taxpayers money in costly repairs and recurring engineering inspections and restore the historic area’s riverine ecology. The project was designed, permitted and construction completed within 211 days to meet the Dam and Seawall Repair and Removal Grant Program deadline; the grant paid for 75% of the project cost.
