Herkimer, NY – Valley Health Services (VHS) will soon be opening the doors of its new $8M assisted living facility in Herkimer, New York.  This facility will provide a dignified, serene, and interactive location where residents will have access to a range of services including personal care, room and board, housekeeping, personal emergency response services, nursing care, physical, occupational and speech therapies, medical supplies and equipment, and case management services. The first of its kind in Herkimer County, the facility will provide options for the over 600 older adults in the area who are currently in need of assisted housing options as well as creating 27 jobs in the community.

This project is located on a 220-acre site with open fields, woods, and a pond for residents to enjoy. The 46 studio apartments are designed to be private and comfortable, with a home-like atmosphere. Multiple socializing opportunities for residents are available including corner sun rooms on each floor, as well as dining and activities in an environment designed to create a “village” feel for resident.

In addition to serving the immediate needs of the area, VHS and Bassett Healthcare Network are using this project to address future needs for both Herkimer’s aging population and a geriatric nursing shortage. The facility is designed to easily expand with additional units to meet growing demand. According to Valley Health Services, 13 percent of Herkimer County will be 65 or older by 2019, and 25 percent of the area’s population will be 65 or older by 2030.  This location also includes an on-site training center for Home Health Aides and Nursing Assistant certification.  VHS will work with local institutions to bring in approximately 48 students a year to train in this unique and hands-on setting.
