Concord, NH – Geosyntec Consultants was awarded a Silver Engineering Excellence Award (EEA) by the American Council of Engineering Companies New Hampshire Chapter (ACEC-NH).

The award was presented at the Chapter’s 2017 EEA ceremony for the design and construction of a high-capacity groundwater supply with in situ treatment. Geosyntec designed and constructed the system for a Midwest biotech production facility to augment their existing water supply and treatment system. The water supply changes were necessary to meet increased water demand at the facility and replace aging infrastructure.

Geosyntec located a site on the property that supported the development of a high capacity, 3,500 gallon-per-minute groundwater production well. They also designed and implemented an in-situ treatment system to remove naturally-occurring iron from the groundwater.

Several traits made the project unique:

  • It demonstrated that a particular in-situ iron removal technology is ideally suited for industrial applications;
  • The treatment of otherwise non-suitable groundwater is becoming increasingly important as our need for groundwater increases;
  • In-situ iron treatment, estimated to be 35 percent of the costs of building a conventional iron treatment plant, helped keep the facility competitive with low-cost international suppliers; and
  • In-situ treatment requires no chemicals and generates no sludge as waste, saving valuable landfill disposal space and accompanying truck traffic
