Publisher’s Message: December 2019

Anastasia Barnes

Wow, how to sum up my first year in review?

In February 2019, the Build Better podcast was launched and thus far we have produced 18 episodes. I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing many extraordinary individuals in our industry, discussing today’s most current and complex topics. You can join in to test your wits by guessing the correct AEC-based quiz question along with HP’s founder, Michael Barnes, in the segment, “Ask Anastasia’s Dad.” If you haven’t had the opportunity to listen, you can find us on Spotify, SoundCloud, Apple Podcasts, and Stitcher, or simply visit our website and click on the Build Better banner.  We’ve got some fun interviews lined up for next year, so don’t forget to subscribe!

Build Better Podcast ArtworkHigh-Profile also published the first ever Vision issue, which highlights companies and organizations that are doing things outside the box to better our industry. Different in format from HP’s monthly publication, it provides a platform for more cutting edge discussion on today’s AEC hot topics. Keep your eye out for Vision 2020!

We had a successful Women In Construction supplement in March 2019 that explored women in all aspects of AEC and how they are contributing to our industry.  We expect our Women In Construction supplement to be even bigger next year!

Speaking of women in construction, I attended the Construction Institute’s Women Who Build Summit in Connecticut this year, and I was thrilled to see how many women came to the event to hear the panels and network with other professionals. I left empowered and inspired, and I look forward to attending in February 2020, when the summit will be held at my alma mater, UMass Amherst! Check out CI’s website for details.

SMPS Connecticut invited me to emcee their biannual Marketing Communications Awards (MCA), held at the end of May. I saw so many familiar faces and made sure to include a few jokes in between the award presentations. Luckily, most of my jokes landed! Guess what? I’ll be emceeing SMPS Boston’s MCA awards next spring. I’m already trying out new jokes on my dad. So far, crickets.

Also in 2019, we expanded our team at High-Profile. Emily Langner joined us at the tail end of last year as staff writer and associate editor, and Sara Mannes came on board in July to head up digital media. We also hired our first ever intern, Brett Sooy of Endicott College, to help out with social media! Are you following us on Instagram?

I was delighted to moderate Massachusetts Building Congress’ Passive Building event, held in October. It was an honor to share the stage with professionals that are leading the way in passive house developments.

Sara Mannes

I recently took part in the Construction Institute’s AEC Leadership Conference that was held at Goodwin College in East Hartford, Conn. This was my first official professional development experience as a leader, and I’m excited to apply what I learned, including encouraging collaboration and inspiring new ideas as we head into the new year.

Thanks to all of our readers and contributors for helping make High-Profile such a success. Enjoy our 2019 Year-In-Review, and take note of the people and companies that have received awards in the latter half of this year.

On a personal note, it’s very rewarding to work with a team of dedicated and enthusiastic people here at High-Profile, and to be part of this innovative and exciting design/build community.

We’ll see you all in 2020!
