Boston – Finegold Alexander Architects has been selected to design the new Lowell Trial Court, sited in the historic Hamilton Canal District of downtown Lowell. The 255,000sf project is set on a 3.3-acre parcel and will consist of seven floors and 17 courtrooms with state-of-the-art security and technology features.

The new courthouse will provide facilities for the Superior, District, Probate & Family, Juvenile, and Housing courts of Middlesex County. In addition, the building will provide new space for the Middlesex County Registry of Deeds, District Attorney, and a robust resource center for self-represented litigants. A parking garage for executive-level staff only one block away is also included.

This project has strong sustainability goals including generating 20% to 30% of the energy that will be used by the facility onsite, saving the commonwealth an estimated $40,000 to $60,000 per year.

This is quite an exciting undertaking, due to the historic district involved as well as the size and magnitude of the project, which will not only bring the courts together in one facility but will also lift and rejuvenate the surrounding area,” said Maurice Finegold, president of Finegold Alexander Architects.

Lowell is a Gateway City, like others of its size in the state it is a mid-size urban center that anchors regional economies across the state that faces stubborn social and economic challenges, with much unrealized potential. “Projects such as the Lowell Trial Court project serve under–realized areas by boosting the local economy, adding commerce, street level activity, jobs, and by rejuvenating large urban areas,” added Jeff Garriga, AIA, Principal of Finegold Alexander Architects.
