Boston – A crew of 25 Costello Dismantling Co. asbestos and interior demo workers completely gutted the 6‐story Buckminster Hotel, as the first phase of the project to restore the Kenmore Square property.

The crew worked for three months with mini excavators and electric material movers. Costello then transitioned to a surgical mechanical operation to demolish the garage, which overhung the westbound Mass Pike.

Protection of the exposed exterior wall was required along with careful dismantling procedures. The work plan required a phased approach as the existing driveway to the rear of the property had to be opened within two days for the abutting tenants.

Dust control was critical in this downtown area. Costello’s in‐house Environmental Division performed the required asbestos abatement. The concrete demolition material from the garage was crushed and installed as backfill into the basement footprint. This procedure avoided having 100 loads of concrete being trucked off‐site for disposal and a corresponding 100 loads of fill required for backfill.
