Worcester, MA – Members of the Greater Worcester Chapter National Association of Women in Construction, NAWIC, hosted its Annual Block Kids Event with 20 fifth and sixth grade students at the Chandler Magnet School in January.

The Block Kids program was created in 1990 to introduce children to the construction industry in an effort to create an awareness of and to promote an interest in future careers of one of the many facets of the industry. Since launching the program, more than 300,000 children have participated.

The national building competition is sponsored at the local levels with local winning entries advancing to regional competition. One semi-finalist from each region is entered into the National Program competition.

Each participating student was supplied with materials and given one hour to build a creative project related to the construction industry. NAWIC members then scored each project based on the child’s use of materials, oral presentation, enthusiasm, creativity, attention to detail and reason for participating.

First, second and third place winners were chosen based on the above criteria and presented with monetary prizes.
