Wise Construction Recycling Effort Yields Two-Fold Results

Winchester, MA – Wise Construction Corporation, of Winchester, recently presented Dana-Farber’s Jimmy Fund with a check for $7,200 to support the Institute’s research of cancer in children. The monies were generated through the sale of building materials that were carefully salvaged by workers during a recent demolition and construction project at Dana-Farber.

According to Wise Construction Senior Project Manager Larry Hamel, LEED AP, the idea to raise money by recycling construction materials came from Wise’s project team members who have undergone extensive training in sustainability and green building techniques. “As a company, we’re dedicated to sustainable building practices and think it’s important to play a leadership role in the projects we undertake,” says Hamel. “We are happy our efforts contributed to two important causes, cancer research for children and sustainability.”

More than 100 workers were involved in the recycling effort as Wise Construction renovated two floors of Dana-Farber’s Harvard Institute of Medicine; the 50,000 square-foot space is a combined office and laboratory facility used for advanced cancer research. Throughout the 24-week project, workers separated and cleaned building components so they could be sold as salvage. The money was collected and presented to Dana-Farber at the project completion.

In 2008, Wise Construction undertook comprehensive training sponsored by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). Most of its executives and project managers received their LEED AP certification, putting them in the top tier of construction professionals who have completed the rigorous USGBC certification process.
