Winchester, MA – A.J. Martini, Inc. and more than 100 participants gathered recently to celebrate the topping off of Winchester Hospital’s Center for Cancer Care at 620 Washington Street in Winchester. The placing of the final steel beam was met with cheers from the crowd of Winchester Hospital board members, medical staff, administrators, employees, volunteers and donors. Local town officials and residents also attended the event.
Opening in the summer of 2011, the project will expand the existing cancer care facility to create a 60,000sf comprehensive center for cancer care.
The center was designed by Steffian Bradley Architects and will bring together clinical staff from three sites into one location.
Designed for LEED Gold certification for commercial interiors, the new center will provide a state-of-the-art facility with the utmost in patient privacy, comfort and convenience. This is the first phase of a larger $50 million project that includes an ambulatory surgery center and enhancements at the hospital’s main campus located at 41 Highland Ave.

“To say that all of us here today are thrilled to celebrate this significant milestone would be an understatement,” said Kevin Smith, president and chief executive officer of Winchester Hospital.

Bill Aalerud, president of A.J. Martini, Inc. construction managers and project executive, said his involvement is personal. In addition to being a longtime hospital volunteer, he often accompanied his mother to her treatments at the Winchester Hospital Radiation Oncology Center before she lost her battle with complications from breast cancer.
