People Women In Construction

ICYMI: WIC Event at Girls Inc. Worcester

Female students are given hands-on presentations about the construction industry.

Worcester, MA – On Feb. 13, F.W. Madigan Company, Inc. partnered with the Girls Inc. of Worcester Eureka! STEM program for a night of Women in Construction.

Nine women speakers shared their experience of working as a woman in the construction industry with 50 Girls Inc. Eureka! high school students.

Speakers came from several different construction companies, with career positions ranging from executive leadership, business owner, project manager, superintendent, carpenter and HVAC apprentice, and construction laborer.  Each company provided different hands-on activities to allow students to work with a variety of construction materials and tools.

The purpose of the Women in Construction event was to continue to spread the word and educate young women about the increasing opportunities for women in the construction industry due to the industry’s ongoing workforce shortages, to offer STEM girls an opportunity to hear and speak with women in a variety of construction careers to instill the belief that these career options are obtainable for them, and to engage young female students with hands-on construction-related activities to build confidence and show that real-world women can use power tools.

Girls Inc. of Worcester inspires girls to be strong, smart and bold. Its capstone program, Eureka!, is a year-round, five-year STEM intensive program that engages and empowers girls in grades 8-12 as they develop confidence and discover leadership and academic opportunities in STEM and STEM-related fields.
