Staples Store Raises Retail Benchmark

The Roslindale Staples Stores recently achieved Gold a rating in LEED for New Construction.

Below is a recent profile published in the NEXUS Newsletter for November 2009.

Building Profile:

  • -Location: 4165 Washington St. Roslindale, MA
  • -Building Type: Retail
  • -Building Area: 19,300 SF
  • -Project completion: 2009
  • -Owner: Staples
  • -Architect: Main Street Architects
  • -Rating System: LEED New Construction v2.2

The 19,300 ft² Staples Store in Roslindale, MA was designed to incorporate innovative green features following the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) New Construction 2.2 standards. Furthering their long-standing commitment to sustainable business practices, Staples sought to minimize the store’s environmental impact. This store will provide customers and associates the opportunity to see sustainable building strategies firsthand, including an innovative mirror-and-lens skylight system, no irrigation system for plantings, and a green housekeeping program.
Green Highlights:

  • -Site: Storm water management strategies reduce post development storm water runoff and treat the majority of rainfall on site. There is no irrigation for plantings and native plant material was carefully selected.
  • -Water: Approximately 20,325 gallons of water are saved per year (56 gallons per day) compared to a standard store.
  • -Energy: This store uses more than 30% less energy than a standard store, reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 105,821 lbs. per year compared to a standard store. The majority of the energy savings are the result of an efficient lighting design and the use of an innovative skylight system. 39 roof skylights provide natural lighting for the store by directing sunlight into the store using mirror & lens assemblies. The skylights reduce artificial lighting use by an estimated 7 hours per day compared to a store without skylights. The energy efficient roof is insulated beyond code to reduce heat gain in the summer and heat loss in the winter. The light-colored roof reduces “heat island” effect (unnatural overheating of urban environments). Windows are tinted to eliminate excessive heat gain but allow for maximum levels of natural daylight.
  • -Materials: Construction materials (drywall, insulation, steel, concrete, carpet and parking stops) incorporate recycled content. The majority of demolition and construction debris were diverted from landfill. There are convenient in-store recycling areas for cardboard, paper, plastic, glass, and aluminum. Office technology, personal electronics and ink and toner recycling is offered in this store, and by all Staples stores.
  • -Indoor Environmental Quality: The carpet, paints adhesives and sealants used inside the store contain low levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) in order to provide healthy indoor air quality for employees and customers. Additionally, vacuum equipment will use High Efficiency Particulate Arresting (HEPA) filters to reduce to airborne dust and a green housekeeping program is followed.
