Needham, Ma – SolarOne Solutions announced today the issuance to it by the US Patent Office of a patent that covers
the high efficiency lighting characteristics of its SO-Bright® Technology in its solar powered lighting systems.

The patent for invention number 7,863,829 is for a series of techniques that optimize lighting efficiency for an outdoor lighting system which is powered by a limited power source, such as a battery and solar panel or windmill or generator.

“This latest patent established several key claims that give SolarOne systems and other lighting systems that contain the company’s SO-Bright® Technology, long-term Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) advantages” said Moneer Azzam, President and CEO, SolarOne Solutions. “The patent is just another confirmation of SolarOne’s technical leadership in this burgeoning
field…and there are more in the works.” he added.

The techniques in this patent set forth means to drive the LEDs and control their spectrum in such a way that consumes
the least amount of energy in a given set of ambient conditions. Energy efficiency is vitally important when working
with higher cost sources of power, such as solar electric (e.g. photovoltaic) or wind power, especially in combination
with energy storage devices, such as batteries or fuel cells. These techniques produce additional benefits, for instance
lower operating temperatures, which translate to longer component lifetimes and a broader marketplace.

SolarOne has thousands of systems deployed across the globe that employ its patented SO-Bright® Technology,
including Masdar City in Abu Dhabi where the systems were designed for 55° C Ambient conditions.

“Today’s marketplace for commercial-scale solar powered lighting is starting to grow at a faster clip and with it
increasing competition. The most successful solar lighting businesses will be those who effectively apply their know-
how and leverage their intellectual property to give customers the best value through long-term performance and
reliability,” said Mr. Azzam.
