Concord, NH — Sanborn Head along with other contributing consultants are the Overall Winners of the 2017 Engineering Excellence Awards for the Broad Street Parkway project in Nashua, New Hampshire. The project was the largest municipally managed roadway project in the history of New Hampshire and benefits the community as it links downtown Nashua with the F.E. Everett Turnpike.
The award was presented to the City of Nashua’s team of primary design consultants, which included Sanborn Head, Hayner/Swanson, Inc., Stantec, WSP|Parsons Brinkerhoff, and Vanasse Hangen Brustlin. The design team and other subconsultants were recognized by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of New Hampshire during the awards ceremony on March 16.
Sanborn Head performed the environmental engineering for the Parkway, which involved construction of 1.8 miles of a new two-lane road and three bridges between downtown Nashua and Exit 6 of the Turnpike (Broad Street – NH Route 130). Sanborn Head managed over 20,000 cubic yards of asbestos-contaminated soil by designing disposal cells in compliance with the state asbestos regulations with review and approval by the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services as part of the permitting for the project.
“It is a great honor to have been selected for this award,” said Vern Kokosa, P.E. of Sanborn Head, who was the engineer in charge of managing the asbestos relocation. “By providing environmental engineering services, we were able to keep New Hampshire residents safe and avoided off-site transportation of asbestos on city streets.”
Each year the ACEC sponsors a national Engineering Excellence Awards Program to recognize engineering projects which epitomize quality, innovation value and client satisfaction. In addition to receiving the 2017 Overall Winner award, Sanborn Head received Honorable Mention for their independent submission in the environmental engineering category. “Managing the disposal of that much asbestos-contaminated soil in a safe and environmentally conscious manner is a great feat,” noted Sanborn Head President and Chief Operating Officer Barret Cole, P.G. “I am very proud of our team for their contributions and for bettering our community and state.”
