Nitsch Winner of Gold Engineering Excellence Award

Boston Public Library Johnson Building

Boston – The American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) has named Nitsch Engineering as a winner of the 2018 Gold Engineering Excellence Awards for renovation work on the Boston Public Library’s Johnson Building.

The firm was retained by the City of Boston to assist with reinvigorating the Boston Public Library’s Johnson Building to make space not only for books, but for people, thereby transitioning from an inward-facing fortress to an inviting public space.

To help meet this goal, Nitsch  applied innovative civil engineering techniques on the heavily-trafficked site on the corner of Boylston and Exeter Streets.  The firm met the key challenge of solving multiple complex issues within the small site, including recharging vulnerable groundwater levels to maintain building stability, all while keeping the library open and accessible to the public.

The 2018 Engineering Excellence Awards were announced at the recent ACEC/MA Engineering Excellence and Awards Gala with emcees Beth J. Larkin, PE, MBTA Assistant General Manager for Capital Delivery and Housamm (“Sam”) H. Sleiman, PE, CCM, MassPort Director of Capital Programs & Environmental Affairs.
