Cambridge, MA – Biogen Idec’s plans to move executive offices from Boston to Cambridge took a step forward recently, with Alexandria Real Estate Equities and Boston Properties breaking ground on two buildings included in what is planned to be an estimated $500 million in construction, encompassing 1.73 million-sf of buildings on 11 acres in East Cambridge.

The project’s progress keeps the biotech giant on track for the scheduled completion in 2013.

Alexandria’s building at 225 Binney St. will be about 307,000sf spread among six stories. The Boston Properties building will be 190,000sf at 17 Cambridge Center.

The move is expected to put Biogen’s business operations in closer proximity to its R&D activities that are already housed in Kendall Square.

Biogen, the world’s largest maker of drugs for multiple sclerosis, will occupy the first building in the new development, called Alexandria Center at Kendall Square.
