Northampton, MA – The new 83-unit assisted living community known as Christopher Heights of Northampton recently celebrated a grand opening for residents, project partners, investors, and supporters.
The $10.1 million facility, developed utilizing an award of low income housing tax credits, includes 43 units set aside for low-income individuals.
Built by Cutler Associates, designed by SMOOK Architecture and Urban Design, with interiors by Currier & Associates, the residence provides safe, affordable housing for seniors seeking an active community with a high quality of life. It is the newest addition to an ongoing redevelopment of a former state hospital site into a master planned, mixed-use community called Village Hill.

This new community is transforming a 126-acre site into a variety of office, R&D, retail, light-industrial, and diverse residential uses. Included in the Village Hill community plans is an array of open space and recreation areas for enhanced living.
The facility is the fifth Christopher Heights assisted living project built by Cutler Associates.

“The design and our building program is based on a prototype that helps reduce the capital cost of construction and deliver a more affordable cost for seniors,” said Garth Johnson, Vice President for Senior Living and Healthcare for Cutler Associates. “Within the prototype is a lot of flexibility to meet the unique site and scale requirements of each project, and to introduce energy reduction features that reduce costs throughout the life of the building.”

Christopher Heights will exceed the criteria for LEED for Homes Silver Certification, a national benchmark certification for energy efficiency and carbon reduction. Together with SMOOK Architecture and Urban Design, the project team collaborated to include a range of features to reduce water use and utility demand throughout the building and site.
The Christopher Heights communities are affordable assisted living communities offering private apartments in beautiful home-like settings. Their mission is to help residents maintain their independence by providing quality assisted living services in a dignified living environment.
