Cambridge, MA – Callahan Construction announced it is overseeing the construction of 52 New Street, on behalf of its client Just A Start. When complete, the complex will yield 106 units of affordable housing in a brand new 6-story structure consisting of 22 one-bedroom, 62 two-bedroom, and 22 three-bedroom units.
Just A Start, a longstanding community development corporation, is committed to providing and preserving affordable housing, offering education and training for youth and adults, and building community engagement.
The 52 New Street development is located on a tight, one-acre parcel that was once the site of a small gym and asphalt parking lot. Of the units, 17 will be restricted to households at incomes of 30% AMI or below; 10 will be designated as workforce units, restricted to households earning 80% AMI or below; and 79 will be restricted to households earning up to 60% AMI.
Representatives of Callahan say the firm has deep experience in both the residential and affordable housing sectors, with a knack for building high-quality spaces with sustainable features all within the confines of strict budget parameters, and that the company also is a regular fixture on the Boston and Cambridge landscape, oftentimes working in confined spaces where maintaining pedestrian access and respecting abutters is essential to project success.
In addition to working with Just A Start to deliver maximum value against the budget requirements, Callahan will ultimately deliver a residential facility that complies with Passive House International standards, in turn creating an ultra-low energy project that aligns with both city and state goals of reducing energy consumption.
