Boston’s Free Tax Service for Residents Launched

Boston – As tax season begins, Mayor Michelle Wu and the Boston Tax Help Coalition (BTHC) officially launched this year’s free tax services for residents on Jan. 28.

This will be the BTHC’s 20th tax season, and it will be offering these services to residents making $60,000 or less per year. Free tax preparation kicked off on Friday and will run through April 19.  In response to COVID-19, the Boston Tax Help Coalition and community partners have modified their tax services, providing them both in the community and remotely to ensure that all qualified residents can file safely while maximizing their tax refunds and credits, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC). Tax preparation assistance is available in English, Spanish, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole, Portuguese, French, Vietnamese, Mandarin, and Cantonese. Other additional languages are available through an IRS language access line.

The BTHC serves approximately 13,000 taxpayers annually, training hundreds of volunteers whose IRS-certified work returns $24 million in refunds and credits directly to taxpayers. In addition to tax preparation, the Coalition provides clients with other free services to improve their financial health, including credit building and banking access.
