Newburyport, MA – Dore & Whittier Architects, Inc. is pleased to announce that the Bishop Feehan High
School project in Attleboro, Massachusetts, has received a design award. The High School’s major addition and renovation project, completed in 2009, has been selected to appear in American School & University’s 2010 Educational Interiors Showcase. This honor recognizes “the most effective learning environments in America”. In preparing the award application, the project’s designers, Dore & Whittier Architects, Inc. of Newburyport, Massachusetts, noted the importance of adaptively reusing a 1961, former 4-story masonry convent building. D&W utilized energy efficient systems and sustainable materials to integrate the school’s educational program into the aging residence. The addition is a high performance, glass-enclosed library/media center and classroom wing which celebrates the school’s vision toward the future. This successful project is the first Feehan campus building to undergo extensive upgrades as identified in the master plan study completed by D&W in 2005.

The High School is featured in the August issue of American School & University’s Educational Interiors Showcase, as well as on the website, SchoolDesigns.com. A jury of American Institute of Architects (AIA) members and education administrators evaluated submissions from architectural firms, schools and universities across the country.

Established in 1992, Dore & Whittier is a leading design firm specializing in educational facilities planning, design and project management. D&W has offices in Newburyport and South Burlington, VT, enabling the firm to service Massachusetts and New England.

Dore & Whittier has received recognition for designing other award-winning facilities, such as the new Dedham MiddleSchool, which earned Green School Certification from the Massachusetts Department of Education and the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC). Projects currently in design include the new Rogers Middle School in Rockland, Massachusetts, to be physically connected to the Rockland High School which will undergo comprehensive renovations, the Weston High School science labs building, and the new Avery Elementary School in Dedham. Each of these projects is incorporating green design principles to promote healthy, energy efficient buildings. Of special note, the recently completed Newton North High School is the first LEED-for-SchoolsTM project in the State of Massachusetts.

“We take a proactive look at energy efficiency and sustainability in all of our design projects and encourage clients to consider the many benefits of ‘green design’,” Donald M. Walter, Vice President, explains.
