Groton, CT – A/Z Corporation recently completed the installation of a 5.6 megawatt fuel cell system designed to supply ultra-clean electricity and steam to Pfizer’s research and development site in Groton. The unit was installed under a power purchase agreement with FuelCell Energy, Inc.
A dedication ceremony was held on the site in November. The event featured representatives from Pfizer and A/Z Corporation as well dignitaries including Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy and U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal.
The new fuel cell power plant is allowing Pfizer to reduce its energy costs and its carbon footprint while supporting clean air initiatives. The highly efficient combined heat and power (CHP) fuel cell system was configured to operate continuously, in parallel with the grid during normal operation and independently supplying electricity to campus loads during grid outages.
The emissions profile of the fuel cells installed at the Pfizer facility will reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; avoiding more than 28,900 tons of CO2 and more than 34 tons of NOx annually as compared to the average U.S. grid, which is equivalent to removing more than 5,300 cars from the road.
A/Z has installed similar units, including the largest fuel cell installation in North America located in Bridgeport, CT, which is able to produce 14.9+ megawatts of clean, quiet energy.
