Boston, MA  − The Boston Society of Architects (BSA) membership voted to confer the 2009 Harleston Parker Medal for Architectural Excellence on the Parker Community Boathouse at its annual meeting recently. Co-sponsored by the City of Boston, the award annually recognizes “the most beautiful” building or other structure built in the metropolitan Boston area in the past 10 years.
Designed by Anmahian Winton Architects, the Cambridge boathouse stood out amongst the nominations this year in its realization of many different notions of beauty: The building is a striking presence, makes intelligent use of form and material, and provides opportunities for health and recreation for people who might not have access to a private or institutional boathouse.
More than 80 projects were nominated for the Harleston Parker Medal by BSA members and allies. The jury ultimately reduced that number to a short list of five projects, which they visited as a group.  Chaired by Eric HÖweler AIA of HÖweler+Yoon Architecture/MY Studio, the jury included Michael Blier of Landworks Studio, David Carlson AIA of the Boston Redevelopment Authority, Mariana Ibañez of IK Studio and Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, Paul Kassabian PE, LEED AP of Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, Steve Lacker AIA of Sasaki Associates, Rachel Levitt of Boston Home magazine, Audrey O’Hagan AIA of Audrey O’Hagan Architects, Donald Stull AIA of Stull & Lee and Elise Woodward AIA, LEED AP of Shepley Bulfinch.
