Stamford, CT – Final touches are being installed at Summer Place senior housing.. The new structure at 992 Summer Street replaces Czescik Homes, which was located in a flood plain and required the evacuation of all residents during Storm Sandy.

Summer Place was developed by the Housing Authority of Stamford d/b/a Charter Oak Communities through its development affiliate, Rippowam Corporation, in partnership with Inspirica, Inc., a Stamford-based community service agency.

Kenneth Boroson Architects of New Haven designed the new building on a downtown “infill” site which offers closer proximity to services, shopping, and public transportation.

The five-story complex contains 40 one-bedroom units and eight studio apartments for residents age 55 and older. All units have fully equipped kitchens, baths, and living areas, as well as private basement storage. The ground level is completely devoted to community space and service areas, including the property manager, security station, case manager, healthcare office, community meeting room and kitchen, and laundry facilities.

Additional community space will be available to residents on the 6,500sf rooftop deck.

The entire 38,550sf building was designed to be highly energy efficient, following requirements established by the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority (CHFA) and Energy Star guidelines.

The project received public and private funding from various sources, including the HUD Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery program, administered by the Connecticut Department of Housing, awarded to regions severely damaged by Storm Sandy. Federal Section 8 subsidies are available to half of the units, and the balance offer rents below market rate.
