ACEC/MA announces Bronze Winner

Norwood, MA – The American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) has named GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. as a winner of a 2018 Bronze Engineering Excellence Awards for work on the widening of the Route 128 roadway in Needham.

GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc., headquartered in Norwood and with offices in Boston, Amesbury, Hingham and Springfield was retained by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation Highway Division to assist with the widening of the Route 128/I-95roadway between Highland Avenue and Kendrick Street in Needham.

The project required construction of embankment fill over soft, compressible organic soils that were up to 25 feet thick.  As an alternative to excavation and replacement of unsuitable soils or preload/surcharge, groundwater improvement using timber piles with a geosynthetic reinforced load transfer platform was used to reduce the impact of construction on the environment, community and traffic.
