Weston & Sampson Recognized by ACEC

Washington – Weston & Sampson, Inc. announced it earned a National Recognition Award for exemplary engineering achievement in the American Council of Engineering Companies’ (ACEC) 56th annual Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) for its role in developing the Resilient Massachusetts Action Team’s Climate Resilience Design Standards tool.

This first-in-the-nation tool advances priority interagency action items aimed at developing consistent design standards using climate projections while also integrating climate vulnerability and resilience into the planning of new building, infrastructure and natural resource projects. The free, public-facing web-based tool uses localized climate projections and project-specific information to quickly and efficiently generate risk-based preliminary climate exposure and risk ratings, and asset-specific recommended climate resilience design standards.

An interactive viewer provides a wealth of information for the tool’s users. Examples include expanded rationales for scores; projected values associated with design criteria (e.g., water surface elevations, rainfall depths, duration of heat waves, etc.); guidance for integrating the information in planning, design, and evaluation processes; and maps illustrating coastal flood risk over time.

The project is among 179 EEA entries this year representing engineering excellence from throughout the nation and the world. Judging for the awards program took place in March and was conducted by a national 27-member panel of built environment leaders, along with experts from government, the media and academia. Award criteria focused on uniqueness and originality, technical innovation, social and economic value, and generating excitement for the engineering profession.

Recognition of all 2023 award winners, including top winners – 16 Honor Awards, eight Grand Awards, and the “Grand Conceptor Award” for the year’s most outstanding overall engineering achievement – will take place at the annual EEA Gala Dinner and Awards Program, a black-tie event to be held on June 13 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Washington, D.C.
