Boston, MA – Walsh Brothers, Incorporated, builders, and subcontractors working on the Yawkey Center for Cancer Care helped raise more than just holiday spirits at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) in December, collecting over about $297,000 for the Jimmy Fund Clinic. The donation, which continues a legacy of generosity and support from construction workers at Dana-Farber, helped fund the clinic’s Winter Wonderland celebration, a more than weeklong event that included visits from Santa, gifts, holiday meals, and arts and crafts.

“Our mouths dropped when they handed us the check,” says Lisa Scherber, activities coordinator for the Jimmy Fund Clinic. “It gave us money not only for the Winter Wonderland, but for programs and gifts throughout the year.” The idea for the donation began last fall, when Mike Morgan, a union pipefitter working for J.C. Higgins on the Yawkey Center, posted a flier asking workers to donate an hour of their salary to the Jimmy Fund Clinic.

“We are so happy to be able to help in any way and it is just a small way to help these children,” Morgan says.

More than $13,000 was raised directly from jobsite contributions, with the remainder coming from construction manager Walsh Brothers, their subcontractors, and other businesses and several unions involved in the construction project.
