Attleboro, MA-  ABC Rhode Island (ABC-RI) honored Nadeau Corporation with its Excellence in Construction(EIC) award for the Gender and Sexuality Center delivered for The University of Rhode Island.

ABC-RI ’s Excellence in Construction program has become the premier competition within the construction industry that recognizes outstanding construction projects across the state. The celebration honors the most innovative and high quality construction projects, safety programs and diversity programs.

Nadeau’s task was to complete the new construction of the 5,000sf student center for URI. This consisted of a modern contemporary wood framed structure clad in red cedar siding with a masonry veneer feature on the front elevation as well as a pergola over a seeded aggregate walkway leading to the entrance.

Nadeau  partnered with Lerner Ladds Bartels for this important project. Drayton Fair, principal at LLB Architects, said “The design of the center was inspired by themes found in history and daily LGBTQ life.”

The first obstacle to delivering this project was to demolish the 4,000gsf Ruggles House. This structure had been a staple on the URI campus for many years but needed to come down to make way for the new center. Before the total demolition of this building came removal of asbestos materials coming from the exterior as well as the first, second, and third floors.

Another challenge that Nadeau overcame was the project schedule. Spawned by the re-scope, re-bid, and delayed award, the schedule now was pushed to a point where the most weather sensitive work was during one of the harshest winters this area has seen in some time. The entire building was tented and heated to accommodate exterior stone veneer and interior finishes.

This exciting project was a challenge from day one. The original bids were all significantly over budget, and the state chose to call in the three low bidders for value engineering suggestions. The architect culled the best of these suggestions, incorporated them into a new bid package, and put it back out to bid to the three original low bidders. Nadeau maintained its number one position and was awarded the project
