Mass. Workforce Housing Debuts

Gateway North/ rendering The Architectural Team, Inc.

Lynn, MA – The first-ever multifamily project funded by the state’s new $100 million Workforce Housing Initiative recently celebrated its opening with a ribbon-cutting attended by Governor Charlie Baker.

Designed by The Architectural Team, Inc. (TAT), the 71-unit mixed-income, mixed-use development called Gateway North provides high-quality homes for low- and middle-income households, and serves a varied demographic that may not qualify for existing affordable housing programs. Gateway North’s mix includes 10 units reserved for households earning 70% of the area median income (AMI), as well as 53 traditional affordable housing units and eight market-rate homes.
The six-story Gateway North offers one-, two- and three-bedroom units, along with ground-floor commercial space two blocks from a commuter rail station. Reflecting Lynn’s waterfront location, Gateway North also incorporates flood-resistant, resilient design elements.
Designed by TAT for Hub Holdings LLC, and Lynn Housing Authority & Neighborhood Development (LHAND), Gateway North received critical funding through MassHousing, whose $100 million Workforce Housing Initiative was announced in May 2016 by Governor Baker. The program targets individuals and families with incomes between 61% and 120% of AMI, and it provides subsidies to create 1,000 new units of workforce housing statewide.
