Bedford, NH – Crowds of eager Bedford shoppers lined the pavement for the opening of Whole Foods’ newest location on the former site of the historic Wayfarer Inn. The 43,000sf store on South River Road anchors Goffe Mill Plaza, memorializing the Goffe family’s name and 200-year ownership of the property. Employees cheered as the supermarket hosted its version of a ribbon cutting with a Bread-Breaking Ceremony.
Town officials gathered with development owner, Jiten Hotel Management (JHM) of Brockton, Mass.; design-build firm PROCON of Manchester, N.H.; and civil engineer company TFMoran of Bedford, N.H.

Fourth-generation descendant of John Goffe, David Woodbury, also attended the celebration.

JHM developed the mixed-use project in partnership with PROCON, who designed and constructed the foundation and exterior shell. As early plans took shape, Bedford officials wanted to ensure the Wayfarer Inn’s long and rich history would not be forgotten. With this in mind, JHM, PROCON, and Whole Foods committed to retaining as many historical elements as possible. As a result, Whole Food’s traditional framework was complemented by reclaimed portions of the original mill and bridge materials.

JHM Vice President Beth Scherer talked about the overall Goffe Mill Plaza project. “We enjoyed seeing the reclaimed products from the Wayfarer Inn used in Whole Foods. And, we are excited about the green spaces this project will eventually provide to the community. It is going to be a nice area for families to gather, as well as take in the beautiful waterfall and dam.”

Whole Foods Market Regional Vice President Laura Derba commented, “The feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. The Town fully supported the process of getting this store built, and our team members are excited and ready to open it to the community.”

The John Goffe Historical Mill remains directly behind the plaza as a salute to the past, with a new roof and exterior refurbishments. Prominently placed signage will point out its historical significance for residents and visitors to enjoy for years to come.

Whole Foods is a significant part of the growing Goffe Mill Plaza complex, that embodies the mixed-use development era, by blending residential, commercial and cultural amenities for “Village Style” living. Upon completion, the 16.2-acre complex will include two restaurants, an apartment building, fitness center, and nearly 8,000sf of retail space. In February 2016, the 2,900sf Provident Bank, also a part of the Plaza, opened its doors.
