IES Completes Shaffer Landfill Solar Project

North Billerica, MA – Interstate Electrical Services Corporation recently completed the installation of a photovoltaic solar array on the site of the former Shaffer Landfill in the town of Billerica, the largest of its kind in Massachusetts.

This installation blankets the 63 acre capped superfund site with 20,000 solar panels, racking, inverters and various electrical components, transforming a previous landfill onto a community asset that on a sunny day generates nearly 6.0 megawatts of clean renewable energy. Interstate began construction of this fast track project in February, and in spite of the significant challenges of this past winter’s weather, lack of site accessibility and environmental conditions and site restrictions, completed the project in 92 days.

“This was an extremely challenging project for our company that required a creative pro-active approach to the numerous obstacles a site like this presents. Our team did a great job solving the issues, coordinating the efforts of two offsite pre-fabrication facilities operated by the company, managing site and over- the-road logistics and with a very determined field installation crew that every day seemed to be battling the elements, led to the successful completion of the project. The greatest satisfaction comes from knowing that all the hard work and effort of our company will benefit the residents of Billerica for years to come, Interstate’s home town for over 25 years.” commented James Alibrandi, Interstate’s President.

In addition to installing photovoltaic power generation systems, Interstate provides electrical construction, electrical service, network infrastructure, process and building automation controls to commercial, industrial, health care, and life science pharmaceutical customers of all sizes, across New England.
