SCUP: TIMELESS: The Evergreen Ideals of Olmsted at Wellesley College

October 11 @ 2:30 pm - 6:00 pm

October 11 & October 25
Wellesley College Oct 11 | Trinity College Oct 25

Not a man to be confined or defined by a singular pursuit, Frederick Law Olmsted was at turns a farmer, manager, reporter, activist, and author, all before he settled into his role as a landscape architect. This role, for which he is most widely known, represents the culmination of all his earlier pursuits, his love of travel, and his keen observation of nature and its powerful impact on health and wellbeing.

In honor of the 200th anniversary of his birth we celebrate both the man and the profession that emerged from his partnership with Calvert Vaux on the design of New York City’s Central Park. Olmsted’s reach spanned coast to coast, and in addition to parks, his work included hospitals, insane asylums, military housing, religious institutions, homes for the elderly, as well as colleges and universities.

Arguably more than any other art form, landscape architecture is ever evolving; maturation can take centuries, trees define space differently as they grow, and the passage of time continuously enriches outdoor spaces. College and university campuses likewise continue to evolve, but are memorialized in the mind’s eye of students, faculty, and visitors.

Join us this fall as the SCUP North Atlantic Region celebrates one remarkable man with two afternoon events on two campuses. Both three-hour events will include a presentation, a campus walking tour, and a reception.
