BSA: Life Sciences & Sustainability: Exploring Opportunities With Alexandria Real Estate

April 13 @ 8:30 am - 9:45 am

Scientific research is one of the greatest drivers of the Boston economy. But, it is also one of the greatest drivers of greenhouse gas emissions. As the Commonwealth and cities like Boston, Cambridge and Somerville target carbon neutral, how will laboratory buildings achieve net zero emissions without putting the squeeze on this critical economic engine?

Join our conversation with Rick Malmstrom, Executive Director of Sustainability Operations in Greater Boston for Alexandria Real Estate. Alexandria is often considered to be the gold standard for life science development. They are also setting the gold standard for ultra-low emissions laboratory buildings. How are they achieving this impressive goal?

A two-pronged approach: The first strategy is to procure renewable energy to power the properties in their Greater Boston region. The second strategy is their pioneering work to develop ultra-low fossil fuel lab buildings. Now under construction in Kendall Square, Alexandria is building a 500,000 GSF core-shell lab that will approach fossil fuel free for space heating. Rick will be joined by Jacob Knowles, Director of Sustainable Design at BR+A Consulting Engineers, to describe the integrated design that will achieve this goal.
