C.E. Floyd Wins Award for Middlewoods of Newington

Middletown, CT – At a recent ceremony, C.E. Floyd Company received a CT Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Excellence in Construction Merit Award for its work at Middlewoods of Newington, an assisted living community. C.E. Floyd teamed up with edm CT and United Methodist Homes on the design-build addition and renovation project.

Originally, the scope of work was to renovate common areas and update perimeter areas with new carpet, lighting, window treatments, artwork, and furniture. During preconstruction, Middlewoods executive director Kathy Braga informed the team that she envisioned more common space and amenities. That’s when the project took a new direction.

C.E. Floyd Company worked with architect edm to give the Middlewoods community what it wished for and to have the project make financial sense for the owner, United Methodist Homes. The result was a 4,250 sf courtyard infill addition and a 28,450 sf interior renovation.

Braga, commented, “The first time we met to discuss our vision of ‘building a building inside of a building’, C.E. Floyd and edm calmly looked at us, didn’t bat an eye, and told us that of course [they] could make it happen. And they did!”

Middlewoods is surrounded by fully developed commercial land and wetlands, so the footprint of the community could not be expanded outward. To add space, C.E. Floyd had to infill the courtyard with an addition.

Construction workers accessed the site by climbing a scaffolding tower that went up and over the existing building. All excavated materials and building materials had to be moved in and out of the courtyard via crane. If the crane’s load reached a critical weight, the wing of the building the crane went over needed to be evacuated. These lifts were scheduled with the community during times when most residents would be at lunch. C.E. Floyd carefully monitored hallways while critical lifts were occurring.

“C.E. Floyd brought a vision to life,” says Braga. “I am simply delighted at the completion of our project.”
