A note from Lance Fletcher, Director of Sustainable Design at the BAC

I write to pass along to you the following changes in the BAC’s sustainable design certificate program. We are hoping that these changes will help those from throughout the building industry to focus on courses we now have (or will have by the end of this academic year) that address their specific interests. You’ll note that all certificates include courses “from the full curriculum”, to allow flexibility.

Beginning with the Spring 2010 semester, the BAC Sustainable Design program will be expanding the number of graduate certificates it offers in an effort to meet the needs of the many groups responsible for planning, designing, creating and operating the built environment. Four certificates will be available in:

Sustainable Design,
Community Planning and Design,
Sustainable Residential Design,
Sustainable Building Design.

While all certificates will require that students complete six courses with a minimum B- cumulative average, required courses will vary among the certificates.

Students enrolled in the graduate Sustainable Design Certificate program prior to February 2010 will continue to be enrolled for the Sustainable Design Certificate and do not need to reapply. All students who wish to be enrolled for any of the other certificates in the Sustainable Design Program should complete the Certificate Program Application (existing certificate enrollees will not have to pay the enrollment fee a second time). Courses already taken will be applied to the new certificates. As always, students not enrolled in a certificate program may take any courses they choose.

To earn the Certificate in Sustainable Design, students must complete the following courses:

.Sustainable Design as a Way of Thinking
.The Urgent and Hopeful Future of Sustainable Design
.Four courses from the full curriculum

Please note that this is the same certificate we have been offering, with the difference that there will now be two required courses.

To earn the Certificate in Sustainable Community Planning and Design, students must complete the following courses:

.Sustainable Design as a Way of Thinking
.Sustainable Communities: Land Use, Transportation and Planning
                .Two of the following:
                .Sustainable Transportation
                .Greening the City
                .Sustainable Neighborhoods
.Legal Issues in Sustainable Design -From Building to City Scale
.Two courses from the full curriculum

To earn the Certificate in Sustainable Residential Design, students must complete the following courses:

.Sustainable Design as a Way of Thinking
                .Three of the following:
.The Zero energy Home: What, How and If
                .Green Residential Remodeling and Renovations
                .Residential Energy Modeling
.Site Design, Landscaping and Site-Water Issues
.Two  courses from the full curriculum

To earn the Certificate in Sustainable Building Design and Construction, students must complete the following courses:

.Sustainable Design as a Way of Thinking
                .Three of the following:
.The Urgent and Hopeful Future of Sustainable Design
.Green Practice: Energy and Air Quality Principles
                .Environmental Systems
                .Building Envelope
.Site Design, Landscaping and Site-Water Issues
.Materials, Resources and Indoor Environmental  Quality
.Getting the Green Building You Want:Managing the Construction Process
.Two courses from the full curriculum

Once we have the full complement of new courses developed, many courses will run between one and three times a year (there are a few courses we will have to run every session). It may take some experimentation to figure out the best mix. My intention is to post and distribute a schedule for the 2010-2011 academic year by next summer. This should allow everyone to be able to plan ahead.
