Buffalo, NY – Health care for the children and families of Western New York took a major leap forward October 8, as Kaleida Health held a ceremonial groundbreaking for the new John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital in Buffalo, New York, designed by Shepley Bulfinch. The new hospital will replace the current Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo.
Physicians, employees, donors, elected officials, and other dignitaries were on hand to kick off construction on the new $270 million facility. Lt. Governor Robert Duffy was the event’s keynote speaker.
“Today we move closer to making the promise of the best in pediatric care a reality for the children of Buffalo,” said project architect Uma Ramanathan of Shepley Bulfinch. “For families, this means not only access to the best medical technologies, but also a place that is supportive and welcoming.”
Women & Children’s Hospital president Allegra Jaros said, “Today, we secure the best and brightest doctors, the most advanced technology and programs, extensive research, dedicated and compassionate staff, and the utmost attention to patient and family-centered care for our children in Buffalo and Western New York.”
The historic project will right-size and consolidate services in a 12-floor, 183-bed, free-standing, modern facility on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. It will be an integral part of the campus, linking with Buffalo General Medical Center, the Gates Vascular Institute, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, and the new University at Buffalo Medical School.
Shepley Bulfinch’s connection to Buffalo dates to 1870, when Henry Hobson Richardson completed the Buffalo Psychiatric Hospital, today the H.H. Richardson Complex. Turner Construction is the construction manager for the project.
Construction is expected to take approximately 34 months to complete, with doors opening in 2017.
